Criminal Intelligence Responsibilities

The Criminal Intelligence Division of the Sheriff’s Office handles the gathering of intelligence related to organized criminal activities within St. Bernard Parish.  The division also monitors registered sex offenders and those on supervised release (probation/parole) within St. Bernard.  Members of the Criminal Intelligence Division work with the intelligence sections of law enforcement agencies  in the New Orleans area, as well as the Louisiana State Police and the federal law enforcement agencies.  One member of the Criminal Intelligence Division is currently assigned to the FBI Violent Crime Task Force on a full-time basis.

Crime information can also be forwarded to the nonprofit group Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 and rewards are available for tips leading to convictions.  All information is treated in a confidential manner and callers can remain anonymous.

The Criminal Intelligence Division is commanded by Maj. John Gutierrez, a 25-year veteran with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office.  A St. Bernard native, he has worked in many areas of the Sheriff’s Office including patrol, the narcotics unit and the detective bureau and has received thousands of hours of law enforcement training. Gutierrez is a graduate of the 119th session of the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, the Advanced Homicide Investigation at the Institute for Police Technology and Management and Detective Supervisor School at the Los Angeles Police Department.  He is a 17 year member of the SWAT team, currently serving as a crisis negotiator, and has received a life-saving award in St. Bernard.
