Chief Deputy Sheriff James Pohlmann is a 28-year veteran of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office and a native of St. Bernard.  Chief Pohlmann, who began his law enforcement career in 1983, has served in virtually all areas of the department, including Communications, Corrections, Patrol, Traffic, Criminal Investigations and SWAT. 

Chief Pohlmann has also held various commands throughout his career, including SWAT Commanding Officer, Chief of Field Operations and his current position as the highest ranking non-elected member of the Sheriff’s Office, overseeing all law enforcement operations. 

He has received thousands of hours of law enforcement training and is a graduate of the 181st session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
 
Chief Pohlmann has received numerous commendations throughout his career, from the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office as well as outside law enforcement agencies and civic organizations.

In 2010, he was selected by the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year and in 2009, Chief Pohlmann was selected by Crimestoppers as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
 
Chief Pohlmann has represented the department on numerous boards and committees and currently sits on the board of the St. Bernard Parish 911 Communications District as well as the St. Bernard Housing Redevelopment and Quality of Life Commission. Chief Pohlmann also currently holds an appointment from Governor Bobby Jindal to the Louisiana Crime Victims Reparations Board, which awards payments to victims of violent crimes.
 
He is an active member of many professional and civic organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association, the Kiwanis Club and the Park Oaks Neighborhood Association, for which he is past president.
 
Chief Pohlmann began rebuilding his home immediately following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and resides with his wife Monique and three children in Meraux.
